Late Evening Service To Portlaoise
November 3rd 2008
Rail Users Ireland welcomes the introduction of a later evening service to Portlaoise. Rail Users Ireland highlighted the farce of a empty Heuston Portlaoise empty train shortly after 10pm most evenings in the Sunday Tribune on Sunday 27th September. Irish Rail had given a commitment to the people of Portlaoise to provide such as service in the December 2007 timetable change, but none was provided
The details of this service are:
Monday-Friday
- Heuston 22.15
- Newbridge 22.45
- Kildare 22.50
- Monasterevin 22.57
- Portarlington 23.04
- Portlaoise 23.14
This service is operated by a 6 coach Intercity Railcar
Rail Users Ireland reminds Irish Rail of its obligation to provide a rail service in line with the social needs of the state and that it is generously funded to provide this. Over 45% of Irish Rail's operating costs are provided through state subsidy. We note the last train south of Greystones remains 18:35 and west of Maynooth 19:05. We also note that a number of empty trains continue to operate on these and other routes.
