DART Underground - Interconnector

June 28th 2007

Rail Users Ireland today welcomes the launch of the public consultation process with respect to the construction of the Interconnector tunnel between Heuston station and Spencer Dock. Iarnród Éireann have provided a limited amount of information online

The public consultation will be held in Dublin City Council Offices on Wood Quay, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 3rd and 4th of July from 11am to 7pm.

Rail Users Ireland has long supported and promoted the interconnector project. This project is the key to the provision of a fully integrated high capacity rail network for the Greater Dublin Region. Its construction will lead to a massive increase in capacity across all Dublin commuter services and will open up a vast number of journey opportunities. Finally those using Heuston station will have direct and quick access to the city. The interconnector tunnel integrates with Luas and Metro at several locations.

Rail Users Ireland has been active in the consultation phases of the metro to ensure that proper integration would be provided with rail services.

Detailed passenger oriented information detailing the changes to the services and providing practical information.

We however remain sceptical as to the delivery of this project as a result of the low priority given to it by government despite the almost universal agreement that it is the key element in delivering Dublin from its public transport nightmare. Rail Users Ireland notes Iarnród Éireann had previously indicated the project could be delivered by 2012 subject to funding.

Rail Users Ireland would like to remind those in authority that this project was first proposed by CIE in 1975, 40 years on will it finally be in use by the public by 2015? Don't hold your breath
