![]() It seems vandals were responsible. I hope the investigation and its outcome are treated with the level of seriousness that this deserves. Any attempt to derail a train is potentially disastrous, but the location could have made things a whole lot worse.
On a side note, I'm very surprised to discover there were 33 passengers on a train leaving Greystones at 11:10pm on a Tuesday evening. |

![]() I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it, but this should be treated as attempted murder. It will far more likely be treated as an incident of "Boys will be boys"

![]() Based on the information available, I know the exact spot. Not the first vandal incident at this location, a equipment case took a impact from above a few years back, left a big dent.
The derailment containment feature on the line appeared to do its job. Sadly this means the end of the perfect DART safety record, 29 years, 11 months 2 weeks with no in service derailment or collision, 400 million odd journeys.

![]() Well possibly there might be some kind of real risk if the DART spent much time going faster than 30 MPH.
Irish Rail shouldn't be singing and dancing too much about their safety record. It was pure blind luck that the Malahide Viaduct collapse didn't end up as a disaster. And they have had a few other close ones in the last few years where luck as opposed to safety culture saved the day. |
