Tara Street Station
Quote:
ONE of the busiest railway stations in the country is to get a multi-million euro facelift.
Tenders have been sought to redevelop Tara Street station in Dublin, which when complete will have the capacity to allow almost 15,000 passengers per hour travel through it in comfort.
Iarnrod Eireann expects to apply for planning permission next year. Construction work will not result in the station being closed.
One of the busiest transport facilities in the country, about 25,000 passengers a day currently travel through the station.
Iarnrod Eireann plan a future-proofed design which will allow capacity to increase to 14,500 passengers per hour.
The new station will include a high concourse area, with retail facilities; a new main entrance onto Tara Street and extended and widened platforms to reduce congestion. Also planned is a new covered 'train hall' area.
Iarnrod Eireann previously planned such a redevelopment scheme for Tara Street. However, the preferred design would have necessitated a prolonged closure of the station which was unacceptable to the company and its long-suffering customers.
The company will seek designs that will allow for Tara Street Station to remain open throughout the work, to ensure that customers will not be disrupted in using this key city centre station.
Specialists will be appointed later this year and the design and planning stages will then begin. There will be a public consultation process, and the company have promised this will be focused on the local community.
