Default [article] Cullen promises move on integrated ticketing

Cullen promises move on integrated ticketing
Marie O'Halloran
04/05/2006

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen said that if he had to "knock any more heads together" to get an integrated ticketing system for public transport, "there would be very few bones left".

He told the Dáil he had had more meetings on this issue than on any other and it had been "deeply frustrating", and "some of the practices involved have been unacceptable". However, a peer review of the issue would be concluded within the next few weeks and he expected to make decisions then on the next steps to be taken.

Green Party spokesman Eamon Ryan said it was "remarkable that 12 years after the original Dublin transportation initiative report in 1994 set out the clear recommendation to move towards integrated ticketing as soon as possible, we have no effective integrated ticketing".

Fine Gael spokeswoman Olivia Mitchell said the main obstruction was from the State public transport companies, which did not want to co-operate with other State companies or private operators. "It is unacceptable that they should hold the public to ransom," she said.

Mr Cullen said there was no benefit in "playing the blame game", because an integrated system was required.

Dougal: You know what, Ted, I dont want to be a priest anymore. I'd love to be a milkman.

other Dougal quote: "you're right there, Ted"

Dont know why i was thinking about Father Ted whilst watching Oireachtas Report last night.

To be fair to Cullen, in the dail he seems to be well capable of talking off the cuff, without reading out a bloody essay someone in the department wrote and he're more than a match for the opppoisition spokespeople, you get the impression he really enjoys that sort of stuff. I'm wondering how come he lets CIE away with so much rubbish. Maybe he's just plain not interested.

You mention integrated ticketing the RPA they close up and get real defensive

You annoy Irish Rail about getting the exising system to work they get very defensive and only partly agree what is really needed

No one will name or blame anyone else but the fact the operators are doing this makes no sense you can't win unless a third party oufit are in control

was just thinking about integrated ticketing, got a luas smart card.
Last week was planning on parking at sandyford and tramming into st. Stephens' green. didn't in the end but I thought: I'll have to have cash for the car park cos the carpark machine probably won't let me pay by smartcard.

I emailed NotConnexAnyMore and they confirmed that "No you cannot pay for parking with your Smart
Card as the car park is run by a different company called Q Park and
therefore have a different ticketing system."

Now these are two companies the rpa got to run rpa designed infrastructure and they're not integrated. Do we ever see integrated ticketing happening when this situation is allowed to occur?

This sums it all up really.
