Woman killed by train

The woman was hit on the Cork-Dublin railway line at Bishop's Wood level crossing in Co Tipperary at around 4.50pm by a train heading for Heuston Station from Cork. She was killed instantly.

The busy railway line was immediately closed as gardai began an investigation.

Nine trains servicing Heuston Station in Dublin, Kent Station in Cork and Colbert Station in Limerick were all delayed as a result, while the 8pm Dublin to Cork service was cancelled.

Thousands of passengers had to endure lengthy waits on board trains and in stations along the line before it was re-opened.

An Irish Rail spokesman said that although the woman died near the level crossing, she was on the train tracks and well away from the road.

"The woman was on the line when the train struck her," he said.

"We are working with gardai to ascertain the cause."

Emergency services had been on the scene for more than three hours when the line re-opened.

"There were serious delays in both directions but the emergency services own the line in situations like this," the spokesman added.

The line services all trains travelling between Dublin and the Cork, Limerick and Kerry areas.

"We were looking at around 2,500 people getting delayed," the spokesperson revealed.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by gardai.

Is it just me or this slightly the wrong thing to say.

After all its pretty obvious the cause is the train hitting her and 90mph or slower knowing ireland. Shouldnt it be something to do with why she was on the line or how she got through the level crossing in question?

No, what that means is that the nursing home (or was it a small hospital) are being investigated as to how she managed to slip out and go for a stroll when she wasn't supposed to and ended up on the track.
