Another delightful experience with an IE staff member....
Monday blues perhaps?
Standing waiting for the 7:51 Portarlington to Dublin at the top of the platform to board the train cos the first carriage is always nice and empty. Had a bit of luggage which we had sitting in front of us on the ground - on/just over the yellow. Tall older man starts walking up the platform as the (unannounced) train pulls up. We reach for the bags, to board - as the man walks up towards the engine along the edge of the platform (on the wrong side of The Yellow Line). Grumpy Man (snaps) 'What are ye doing with those bags there, get them back behind the yellow line, it's there for a reason'. Mr.2funki 'It is and sure aren't you walking on the other side of it??' Grumpy Man 'Well I'm an official of the company and I'm here to stop people like you from killing themselves by not following the rules' Mr. 2funki 'Well you're also a public servant and there's not the way to speak to customers' Grumpy Man (mutters under his breath) and gives the briefcase or whatever to train driver and walks back to station. Classy. We weren't standing over the yellow line, but because he would've had to walk around the bags he pulls a strop. No uniform, never seen him before.

Yup. Our sports bag felt like ending it all after hearing An Taoiseach's flippant comments at the ICTU conference. We'll keep a tighter reign on it in future.

Anyway, the fact that Irish Rail is spending over 100 million euro on their network is the important issue not the ignorant thicko member of staff - just remember that Barry, the day this customer gets her car and starts driving to work whilst your 100 million euro train is one passenger down.
But, than again, we all know that even if there is no-one on them the trains will run at the exact same time with the exact same carriages as they do today and therefore customer service remains what it is - a joke at best, lip service to the concept at worst. |

It's a cultural problem within IE
There are individuals within Irish Rail who are excellent customer service providers and can really make your day when they bend over backwards to help out.
However, and this is a BIG however, there is also a hardcore of people in that company who haven't a clue about customer service and give an impression that at best they don't really care and at worst take an exceptionally hostile attitude towards customers. The fact that these individuals continue to work in front line positions dealing with customers is testament to the fact that the company accepts and condones this behaviour through its failure to do anything about it. All it takes is one run in with someone like this to put you off a company or service for life. It doesn't mater how computerised, efficient of shiny and new the trains are. |

Precisely why I no longer visit the South from the North having been a regular visitor for many years. The way I was treated by a "member of staff" [a dishellved tramp who was looking at passengers' tickets if you want an accurate description] at Heuston and that an official complaint was ignored mean that I won't be seen on Irish Rail again having in the past travelled over 40,000 miles with them |

But... but... but... placing the bag in the way is good as it stops people walking on the far side of the yellow line.....
