Somewhat related to this: coming back from Longford on Saturday afternoon, there were two security guys at an otherwise deserted Enfield station, and also at Kilcock and Maynooth.

Is there an emerging more general security issue at unstaffed stations, even in daylight?

IE have told me previously they were looking to address the regional issue of security.

Maynooth is not a surprise and given the good weather it would be no harm to have them stationed there. The other stations are a little odd but if it was anti social behavior surly Control could monitor and alert local Guards.

The security company seem to have set up in Galway recently.

I can see the sense in maintaining a presence at some of the more rural stations. You do have to remember that in may places there are are effectively no local guards any more. With Garda station closures over the last few years, many railway stations are 10 miles away from a police response.

Kilcock in particular seems to have an attraction for semi-feral youths on good days. Enfield station is quite isolated despite being so close to the village and the nearby canal area attracts crowds of youths in good weather so again, it could appear quite threatening for one or two people getting off a train in Enfield.

So weather related to. I am actually impressed IE actually had such measures in place over the weekend!
