The National Transport Authority has today (9th December 2011) approved fares increases across all public transport operators – Dublin Bus, Irish Rail, Bus Éireann and Luas. These increases will come into effect in January, 2012 and follow from the reduction in funds available to subsidise public transport announced in the Dáil on Monday (December 5). All transport operators suffered deficits in 2011 and will incur deficits in 2012.

The National Transport Authority has announced fare increases Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann and the Luas service.

The National Transport Authority has announced fare increases across all of the country's transport operators - Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann and Luas.

The new prices will come into effect in January and are as a result of the cut in funds to subsidise public transport announced in Monday's Budget.

Dublin Bus will see fares go up by an average of 15%, the authority said today. But customers using the new ''Leap'' smartcard will be able to avail of fares 5% below the cash fares. Dublin Bus had been looking for increases of between 25% and 36%.

Bus Éireann fares will see increases of 5.4% in city and stage coach services. An increase of 5.1% has been approved for weekly ten journey rates on provincial city, commuter and local services, while a 3% increase will be seen on the annual tax saver tickets for these services. Bus Éireann fare have not increased since 2009.

Rail fare increases have also been approved by the Authority, with DART increases on average of 6% and 6.7% on inner commuter services. A discount on cash fares will also be available for Iarnród Éireann customers who use the Leap card.

The authority has also approved fare rises for the Luas service, which is operated by the Railway Procurement Agency. Adult Luas fares will go up by 5.5%, while children's fares will jump by 12.5%. The authority noted that children's fares have not risen since the launch of the Luas in 2004.

The new Leap card - a smartcard card which will operate across all public transport providers - is available from next week.

The National Transport Authority has approved an increase in public transport fares from 1 January.

Fares on public transport are to increase from January following the reduction in State funding that was announced by the Government last Monday.

Dublin Bus fares will go up by an average of 15%, while Luas fares will increase by around 5.5% for adults and by 12.5% for children.

Bus Éireann city, commuter and local services prices will rise by between 3% and 5.4% and an average 6% increase will apply to Iarnród Éireann operated DART and commuter services.

Significant discounts are to be made available with the new Leap Card, which is to be launched for sale next week.

The new smartcard can be used on all public transport in Dublin.

The National Transport Authority, which approved the increases, said: "All transport operators suffered deficits in 2011 and will incur deficits in 2012."

Dublin Bus fares are set to rise by an average of 15 per cent in January. Luas fares will jump by an average of 6.3 per cent, with single fares increasing by 10 cent. The increases follow the reduction in State funding for transport services announced by the Government earlier this week.

Bus Éireann fares will increase by 5.4 per cent, while commuter and local service tickets are increasing by 5 per cent for weekly tickets and by 3 per cent for annual tax-saver tickets. Dart fares are to rise by 6 per cent and Inner Commuter service tickets will increase by 6.7 per cent.

Commuter rail and Dart fares rise

Commuters face higher rail and Dart fares from today following a reduction in State funding for transport services announced by the Government in December.

Dart fares will rise by 6 per cent and 6.7 per cent on Irish Rail commuter services. Commuters using the integrated Leap Card will pay cheaper fares.

The card offers a 9 per cent saving on Dublin Bus fares, up to 17 per cent off on certain Luas tickets, and between 16 and 19 per cent off on single Iarnród Éireann fares.

The latest increase follows this week's 15 per cent increase in the average Dublin Bus cash fare. The lowest adult cash fare is up by 20 cent to €1.40 while the 13 stages fare is up by 35 cent to €2.65.

Luas fares have also increased by 6.3 per cent on average, about 10 cent on single adult and child journeys

What is the Leap card?

It is a new integrated ticketing system for public transport in Dublin that allows you to use the bus, Luas, Dart and rail services using one ticket.


Where can I buy it?

In shops and newsagents bearing the Leap card sign. There are more than 400 of them in Dublin. Or you can buy them online at leapcard.ie


How much does it cost?

A €5 refundable deposit is charged for an adult card and €3 for a child’s. A minimum travel credit of €5 must be placed on the card at the time of first purchase.


How does it work?

It works just like phone credit. You top up your card in multiples of €5 and the cost of the fare is deducted from the balance every time a journey is made. The card can be topped up in shops or online.


Will it work out cheaper than paying a cash fare?

Yes. The card offers a 9 per cent saving on Dublin Bus fares after an increase in general fares comes into effect in January, up to 17 per cent off certain Luas tickets, and between 16 and 19 per cent off single Iarnród Éireann fares.


How do I use it on Dublin Bus?

For journeys up to 13 stages tell the driver your destination and hold your card to the target on the driver’s ticket machine and the right fare will be deducted. For longer journeys (over 13 stages) use the Leap Card validator on the right hand side as you enter the bus and the fixed fare will be deducted.


On the Luas?

Touch on a validator on the platform before you get on the tram and touch off when you get off. A default fare will be deducted from your card when you start your journey and when you end it the appropriate amount will be refunded on to your card.


On the Dart and commuter rail services?

It works in the same way as on the Luas above. The card can be used between stations within the “Short Hop Zone.” This zone includes all stations in the Dublin area from Greystones to Balbriggan and commuter stations from Dublin city centre to Maynooth and from Dublin Heuston to Hazelhatch.


How do I know how much credit is left on my card?

Cards indicate how much credit is left after a journey is made.


Anything else I should know?

You should register your card online at leapcard.ie. In this way, if a card is reported lost or stolen no one else can use it and the user is refunded the credit on the card.

Luas Fares 2012Luas fare increases will come into effect from Monday, 9th January 2012.

Every effort has been made to keep the increase to the minimum. There will be an increase of 6.3% averaged across the fare structure.

There has been no general increase in Luas fares in three years and there has been no increase in fares for children since the service was introduced in June 2004. Luas does not receive any operating subvention from the State and in order to maintain this position it is necessary to increase fares at this time.
