Default Ticket doesn't go through the barrier? Won't replace ticket.

This seems to regularly happen to my monthly commuter ticket after about 10 to 15 goes through the machines.

My ticket is a 259e monthly from Mullingar to Grand Canal Dock. The problem is when trying to get on at Grand Canal Dock, sometimes there is nobody there to monitor the barriers and so I have to jump over it or buy another ticket to get me to Connolly.

The ticket office won't reprint it for me, apparently there is nothing they can do? It's not my fault - it's the ticket that's defunct - and they actually expect me to have to buy more tickets or continue hopping barriers and put up with all the hassle and repeated explanations that goes with that.

The manager said that all I can do is go to the head office to get it refunded for the rest of the month and then I have to go and buy singles & weeklys to make it up. It's nonsense and expensive on the pocket.

I guess I have to continue jumping barriers.

If there is noone manning the ticket office/area then there is meant to be somewhere where you can walk through, ie buggies, wheelchairs etc. that doesn't sound right? If that is happening i would complain, if for some reason you cant get through you need an exit...

I would demand a replacement ticket and if they dont give you one I would explain what is going on at GCD.

You shouldn't have to!

They won't replace monthly's for some reason.

If its under the tax saver scheme as of October or November it will be a smartcard ticket and these problems will vanish. I've actually held a new monthly smartcard ticket in my hand so it really is coming

Classic routine is to exploit the barriers weakness simply follow close behind a person with a valid ticket.

The ticket is perfectly valid and if you encounter any trouble with staff or the revenue protection people let us know

If the station is unstaffed the wheelchair turnstile is to be left open, the gates have to be left on to allow for tag on/off of certain smartcards when they arrive

Cool. I'll definitely look forward to the smart card. I suspect it's a major improvement.

Thankfully there's no problem with the staff. Normally at Connolly I just get to walk through and flash it and all good to go.

The problem happens regularly weekdays at Grand Canal Dock around 18.30pm - and the gate typically isn't left open.

They seem to have fitted cameras and speakers at certain turnstiles, so as to discourage people from jumping them. I wonder if they fitted a call point at the wide gate, they could better deal with situations like this.

There's exactly such a call point at the southbound platform at Lansdowne Road.

I imagine you either end up with STT (Tara Street) or someone in Connolly.

I imagine you ring the booking office actually. No idea what it does when there's nobody there. Doubt it's STT though.

If I understand correctly though, a ticket between Mullingar and Dublin won't fall under the smartcard scheme?

If its rail only it will become a smartcard if purchased through the taxsaver scheme. Booking office issued tickets will remain mag stripe

If you were to have a fall jumping the barrier i'd say they'd be very quick to replace your ticket!!
