What on earth is the purpose of a train that goes Cobh-Midleton-Cork-Dublin

What kind of numbers to they expect for this? Could they not just add a few more carriages to the 08:45 from Midleton and ask people to change?

Hmmm...

On second thoughts, using those timings, they are identical to the 08:30 from Cobh and 08:45 from Midleton.

Presumably, the special actually starts from Cork at 09:20.

Irish Rail have clearly cut a deal to get these trains in place, the fares are cheap

Note free travel passes will not be accepted on these trains and all other discounts and tickets are not valid

They could have sent the Waterford train the other way... clear the weeds away for the forthcoming 27s...

Limerick J train departs Waterford at 06.40 and it will be at least 10 mins before the a second train can depart.

Both the 06.40 and 07.10 will be clearing the Junction at Kilkenny at the same time and the 07.10 will be stuck behind the special. Could the timetabling be any worse. A 06.30 departure would help things a lot.

Can two trains run between the Kilkenny Junction and Muine Beag at the same time or does one have to arrive in Muine Beag first.

Trains can leave Waterford towoards Waterford West Junction about two minutes apart. The special is probably scheduled to depart at 0642.

Don't see any issue at Kilkenny as the 0710 from Waterford will not have left Lavistown North before 0737.

Things get a bit interesting around Athy as an 0802 northbound departure from Athy would meet the 0720 from Heuston on the single track between Cherryville Junction and Athy.

Any obvious reason the weekday trains are pathed all the way to Sandymount whereas on the Sunday they are punted off at Connolly?

Given the event on 17th June is in Croke Park its obvious why the trains on the 17th terminate at Connolly

The special train on Tuesday 12th is cancelled. Bookings for Sunday 17th are slow and Irish Rail are urging us to advise pilgrims to book as soon as possible.

A bit more detail (undated) from the same source. Presumeably the mid-week special from Midleton has suffered the same fate.

Please Note a message from Dave Murphy, Operations, Plunkett Station, Waterford : “regarding the special trains which are due to operate from Waterford on June 12th and June 17th. At present there are only 5 people booked on the Tuesday and 50 on the Sunday. We are concerned regarding numbers at this stage as we will have to put rosters for drivers and train crew in place very soon”. IF YOU WANT THE SPECIAL TRAINS TO RUN WILL YOU PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR PILGRIMS TO BOOK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

With regard to the special trains running to Dublin for the Eucharistic Congress, the train for the 12th June has been cancelled, and the 17th June train is the only train that will be operating.

Waterford service is now sold out.

What way is the eveing service going to work when returning from Connoly to Waterford. Scheduled to depart at 18.10. Will it along with the 18.40 from Heuston both cross with the 18.05 in Athy and if so can both run Cherryville-Athy behind each other?

Only one train is permitted to occupy the single line between Cherryville Junction and Athy at any time as there are no intermediate block signals.

There is no issue in any event as the 1810 from Connolly should easily reach Carlow in time to cross the 1805 from Waterford and clear Athy before the 1840 from Heuston is scheduled to pass Cherryville Junction.
