![]() I know this is probably discussed somewhere else and falls under the wonderful dream of intergrated ticketing. But last week i had exams in the rds for college so i was happy i knew the 7 o'clock from drogheda stoped at landsdown road. I was all happy, i had my weekly ticket but it had been bought in connolly on tuesday for drogheda, and not monday for pearse by default as usual. I didnt think that mattered, but how was i wrong, cie got something right and has a barrier in place in landsdown that i cant get through with my ticket
![]() Im sorry if im exceeding my stop but i have no other way of getting to my exams, and i dont work so my parents arent going to fork out a couple of euro to hop 2 stops past the normal limit of the commuter. Barriers maybe smart, but i prefare the walking through an open gate with a semi-valid ticket pointed at the face of someone not even looking at me, is this too much to ask? ![]()

![]() Well you can't blame the barrier for not opening is the ticket is not valid

![]() You could just pay the fare. We've all had exams (indeed some of us in the dreaded RDS, which I HATED) and that's not recognised in the conditions of carriage as a valid reason for freeloading
![]() That said, though, you raise a good point, and the answer is perhaps a Smart Card system...in about 40 years time of course. The Oyster card in London allows you to load on your Travelcard but also to have 'normal' fares. I assume there's a good reason why you can't even put a Luas monthly ticket on the Luas smart card, other than general incompetence? |

![]() The RDS sucks while the Mansion house felt like a upgrade

The trick of course is the system automatically gives you a monthly ticket once you reach a certain point thus avoiding the what if I don't travel often enough issue with monthly tickets, thats really the only current benefit of a smart card which the RPA can't understand |

(Total of trips so far) > ((Travelcard for the zones you've been in) - (50p)) you get a retrospective day travelcard (I don't think it works for more than a day yet, although I've only been in london for a few days at a time). (e.g. say that a zone 1-2 one-day off peak travelcard is £4.90, once your running total of trips reaches £4.40 it stops charging). |

![]() You're talking about an organisation that thinks integrated ticketing is to launch a smart card for a private bus company, then launch another smartcard system for a tram company, these two systems not being comaptible with each other.

![]() Drogheda to City Centre definitely covers you as far as Lansdowne Road, so your ticket ought to be valid. You may have to explicitly request "Lansdowne Road" as the destination on your weekly/monthly pass, rather than Connolly. I guess it's something we're all going to have to be more careful about, because it looks like exit validation is here to stay.
I agree the Oyster card is a fantastic system, but it wouldn't be a fraction as good if wasn't for the work Pick and Ashfield had done in the 1920s and 30s incorporating lots of disparate transport companies into an integrated London Transport. London already had a tightly integrated system, and Oyster just tied up the loose ends. |
