Default new faq item about fixed penalties

http://www.iarnrodeireann.ie/about_u...p?faq_id=52#52

http://www.iarnrodeireann.ie/about_u...0Penalties.pdf

I'll point out a few issues and number them according to the leaflet numbers

0)
It's a fixed penalty scheme.
but the "fixed penalty" can vary so it's not fixed. This wishy washyness is the root cause of the whole debate about these penalty fares.

1)
Booking offices are not open for the entire time that trains operate. Ticket machines are normally locked into these closed booking offices.

3)
How is "Reducing the number of passengers not paying the correct fare is not only in our interest, but in the interest of our customers" in my interest.
I don't really care about freeloaders unless they degrade my service. I do care about being delayed by inefficient measures (exit validation) used by IE.

4)
Ah yes that "fixed" variable penalty payment.
Despite being a country wide company, one can only pay by plastic or cash in Dublin.

5) This say's that all passengers starting from any closed station or Broombridge have to pay the "fixed" variable penalty.

6) despite IE's customer charter giving expected waiting times to be served, and IE's website giving times of stations opening hours bearing little resemblance to reality, it's the intending customer's fault if IE provide a poor service apparently.

7)
Ah! you can't pay at your destination. even if you're traveling from Rush and the station is closed.

8)
Ticket vending machines are in operation throughout our network.
Not at all stations though, and not in Broombridge. As there is no ticket office nor ticket machine in Broombridge, bring yer 25 -100 euros with ya for the fixed penalty charge.
Who decides the ticket office is closed?

9)
What does the word Forgotton mean?

10)
Why does the answer to this question contradict the previous answer?

16) Do ticket checkers have the power of arrest?
How much force are authorised ticket checkers allowed use to detain you?

18)
why let igor write customer leaflet? did knuckle drag before spellcheck?

I can rewrite that in some very simple language

If you can obtain a ticket before travelling you must, if you cannot, e.g. station unstaffed or the TVM can't cope with your choice e.g. child ticket,<link to SI 109 1984 section 4>

If you are travelling without a ticket you must obtain a ticket at the earliest oppertunity.

IE staff have no power of detention

There are a lot of posters and notices from IE which set out to intimidate passengers when in fact IE have no legal right to fine you if you board at a unstaffed station provided you make reasonable efforts to buy a ticket when you can

I have boarded at 3 unstaffed stations in the last 2 months paid other end no hassle

0. Why does the second page come first?

Maybe because in your article in Media Discussion "Dr Lynch said they took these steps to secure revenue and because customer research showed that of the things the vast majority of Dart and commuter customers hated most was to see people dodging their fares."

10) Why does the answer to this question contradict the previous answer?
It doesn't - 10 is if you've forgotten your pass, 9 is if you've forgotton your pass. It's a completely different verb.
Anyway, once I don't look in my wallet before I get on the train, I'm OK? Otherwise I have to buy a "daily ticket". What's a "daily ticket"?

15. "Any member of staff that is acting as an authorised Ticket
Checker can issue a fixed penalty payment notice."
How do I know if a member of staff is authorised to act as a ticket checker?

Hmm, actually I'd better remember to check my ticket before I get on.

Otherwise I'll be hit with the penalty (refundable) and I'll still have to buy a single ticket to get home at the same cost as the return (non-refundable).

It'd be nice to be able to get the return and use it as a monetary reminder to check your pockets before I leave home.

feck.
