AFAIK linkedin doesn't do any of that emailing everyone crap.

the idea is that you have 'connections' - other people that you know (that's the key) who are also signed up. once you are connected you can see your mates connections and they can see yours. so if i have 5 connections and they have 5 each then there is 25 people. then if i'm looking for a lawyer or a builder or a graphic designer or a international affairs expert (surely someone will need me someday!) or whatever, i have a look through the 25 and if someone fits the bill i either get in touch with them and say that i'm a friend of Derek's (e.g.) are you interested in getting involved in X? ( or i can ask my mate about them and see if they are what i'm looking for before getting in touch...)

simple really although i understand if people are cinical about this kind of thing but it seems to work

given that P11 is a pretty eclectic group i figured that there would be some pretty interesting connections to be made...
