Works on new terminal could begin in weeks

Construction of the new terminal at Dublin Airport could begin within weeks, according to the Airport Authority's Chief Executive Declan Collier.

Earlier today An Bord Pleanála gave the green light for a €609m project for a new runway and terminal at the airport.

Phase one of the new terminal was passed, subject to 30 conditions, however a proposed further expansion was refused.

AdvertisementThis means the new terminal's floor space will be kept at 75,000sq m, rather than 92,000, as had been proposed under a phase two development.

An Bord Pleanála has granted permission for the new runway subject to 31 conditions.

Condition three of the planning stipulates the new runway cannot be used for flights between 11pm and 7am.

Another condition stipulates that the airport cannot exceed 65 flights within the hours of 11pm to 7am.

Developers must also come to a voluntary arrangement with schools and houses in the vicinity to provide insulation free of charge.

The runway and terminal building are both dependent on metro north being provided.

Ryanair has said it will challenge An Bord Pleanála's decision approving the second terminal at Dublin Airport in the High Court.

Note the bit about Metro North. Fun times ahead. No metro, No new terminal. If construction is to "begin within weeks", I think we need some speed on the Metro North front. I'll stick to my usual thoughts (much to the dismay of our transport/engineering people here) problems/delays may be ahead.

So let me get this straight, tomorrow morning at 7am construction will start on Terminal 2. In 2010 it will open. Metro North by that stage will have slipped by about 3 years. After the 2012 elections the Sinn Féin-Labour-Socialist Party-Bob Geldolf coalition government decide to cancel Metro North in favour of 2.7 million new buses. Does Terminal 2 have to be dismantled, block by block?

I'm too lazy to trawl through the full report but does the Metro condition state that the Metro must be up and running before the terminal can open?

No - there are two conditions relating to the Metro (which are similar for the runway and terminal decisions), namely that the DAA is required to liaise with the RPA and protect the alignment, and to make a financial contribution towards the project. Of course the latter is just a standard condition, considering there's a contribution scheme already in place.

I wonder if DAA will charge RPA €6 for each passenger handled? :D
