Ticketing Query
 

I have been browsing the Irish Rail and Platform 11 sites for this but can't find any info so apologies if it has been asked before.

On the 27th December I will be making a trip to Limerick. As it is over the Christmas period I'll be at home in Portlaoise, so will leave from there, however I intend to return to my place in Dublin. Can I purchase a return ticket to Limerick that will get me back to Dublin, or do I have to purchase a separate single ticket from Portlaoise to Heuston? Will it then be charge as a full price journey Portlaoise to Dublin, or will it be an add-on. Whilst living in the UK, I had more than one arguement with ticket inspectors who tried to charge me full price for a ticket from Manchester to Manchester airport, when I was already on the train and had a ticket from Warrington to Manchester. I previously paid the extension as if it was a complete new journey until a ticket inspector informed me that I could get an add on ticket for about half the price as a separate ticket. Most other inspectors didn't believe me. Does a similar ticket exist on Irish Rail?

The add on concept does exist as ive paid it on many ocassions. For example, I boarded a train to Westport in Kildare with a return ticket. On the return, I decided to travel all the way to Heuston. I paid an add on. If the ticket guy in Portlaoise gives you grief, just buy the basic return from there to Limerick. On the return leg, pay the checker the add on.

It can be done.
