Fare/Zone Question Maynooth-City Centre
Hi! Can someone explain the difference between inner short hop zone and short hop zone and why does Maynooth appear in both zones? Last week I asked for a 3 day inner short hop rail only ticket between Maynooth and the city centre so I could have the flexibility of getting the train home to Maynooth from Drumcondra/Connolly/Tara St/Pearse Street and was charged €17.80. Having looked at this website I think I should have only been charged €16. I've also just got a student travelcard so should I expect to pay €19.50 or €22.50 for a weekly ticket for Maynooth-Dublin. I think the counter staff are just as confused as I am about these zones. Can someone please clarify it for me? Many thanks, Paddy Junior.

There has been a recent revision to the short and inner hop zones, several tickets where withdrawn for the inner hop while the short hop price was not increased during the annual increases. The adult monthly inner hop ticket is no longer available. Irish Rail are not eager to communicate this to the public
Maynooth is in the inner short hop zone For the student ticket, go to the ticket machine, select inner zone and select the ticket, watch out for the next button on the bottom of the screen. Its ticket code 289 for the inner zone and 288 for the outer zone if the booking office staff are confused.

Because IE staff can't remember, the OP has indicated the staff don't know how to issue the ticket.
We have a written committment from the CEO of Irish Rail to sort out the training issue but alas no progress. While we wait why should a passenger pay over the odds, we have the ticket codes. The staff in Maynooth have a reputation for being particularly awkward.

The Irish Rail website also has a money making spin on the Clonsilla to Drumcondra ticket - €4.30 for a single, €8 for a return?

You think thats bad? You should try buying a ticket from Clonsilla to arklow/gorey/rosslare from the ticket machine!
Its 60.50 to buy a ticket at the Clonsilla/coolmine/castleknock tvm for Rosslare. aroundabout 40 for Gorey both are based on a monthly return Not recommended, if you are buying one you should buy it from the ticket office if open, otherwise buy it in connolly. It will save you a few quid Last edited by ThomasJ : 20-10-2009 at 13:58. |

The people in Clonsilla/coolmine/castleknock are good with the cheaper ticket options. I was going from Clonsilla to Arklow sometime last year and asked for a return, the girl there gave me a return to Connolly and a €10 Special Offer ticket at the time (Connolly - Arklow), worked out much cheaper.

Oh I agree with you too.
The TVM is a bit of a lottery. Can you get a family ticket on the TVM (I haven't worked that one out yet) |
