Iarnród Eireann advises customers that the 9.00hrs and 11.05hrs Sligo to Dublin services are currently delayed by up to 90 minutes due to a signalling fault.

Customers are advised that where delays exceed 60 minutes, customers are eligible for refund vouchers under our Passengers Charter

200 stranded on Sligo to Dublin train

More than 200 passengers on the Iarnród Éireann Sligo to Dublin rail service are stuck at the station in Clonsilla after a signal fault this morning.

The train left Longford at 10.15am but was delayed initially in Westmanstown for 35 minutes and came to a halt again in Clonsilla.


Passengers have just been told that power failure is responsible for the delay.

An ambulance has arrived in Clonsilla to take away a person who has fallen ill on the train.

Passengers on board the train said Iarnród Éireann had not given them any indication when the train will continue its journey.

There are no taxis or local bus services yet available at the station to allow passengers continue on their journeys.

Once again another screw up, despite new track, new signaling and new trains the Sligo line is no better than the bad old days, in fact its probably worse

There is meant to be an emergency generator at each signaling location to deal with power failures, needless to say these frequently don't start due to poor maintenance

There are fairly strict procedures to swiftly deal with total signaling failures, there is a gate keeper on duty in Clonsilla who would be more than able to walk down the line to manually operate the level crossing beyond Clonsilla

Bus Transfers are operating between Sligo and Boyle Stations.

How in this day and age can a signallying fault cause suspension of services for most of a day?

All the signalling engineers are somewhere between Wicklow and Rosslare working on the Rosslare project

The Sligo line is plagued with signalling faults no one seems to know why I count 5 fairly major ones in the last 5 months or so. Thats more or less equal to the total number of serious signalling faults for the rest of the network in the same period.

Admittedly today appears to be a fault on the 1970's Clonsilla panel since its Porterstown, however since that is linked to the new system it could be that at fault, the rest of the setup is all mid to late 1990's with the section beyond Maynooth being 2006

If the fault is Porterstown at the very worse Maynooth - Druncondra so Mullingar - Sligo can be run, backup signaling panel is in Mullingar

Of course the notice doesn't say Docklands is cancelled as well

Will Bus eireann accept irish rail tickets this evening?
refunds from IE are uselss as they are in the form of vouchers. Not much use if you have an annual ticket

There is no agreement with Bus Eireann to take tickets, they might, they might not accept them

Refunds are increasingly being issued on dockets which can be cashed at stations, this appears to be the case when a large sum is involved, however it is practice

Really we could set up an exchange program of cash for delay vouchers, or those more generous could donate them to us to pay the bills of keeping the show on the road

More than 200 passengers on the Iarnród Éireann Sligo to Dublin rail service are stuck at the station in Clonsilla after a signal fault this morning.

The train left Longford at 10.15am but was delayed initially in Edgeworthstown for 35 minutes and came to a halt again in Clonsilla.


Passengers have been told that power failure is responsible for the delay.

An ambulance was called to attend a person who fell ill on a second train travelling from Dublin to Sligo which was delayed at Coolmine.

A spokeswoman for Iarnród Éireann said Maynooth commuter services are not expected to be disrupted this evening.

The sligo line notice on the website was only updated ten minutes ago. doesn't say anything like that?!

If a signalling fault is stopping maynooth/clonsilla from running, how are longford/sligo getting past porterstown?

The last power failure at clonsilla station nearly 10 years ago, services did not run again until 5:15 the next day!
