There is a separate project covering the IT systems on the commuter fleet

It may be rolled out as one system, but the tender was for tracking of the ICR fleet only

i'm curious of that myself!

how long will it take.

also if there are intercity railcars operating m3/maynooth services will this show life information on the website for those services?

The website backend is ready for GPS.

The GPS should be in place before end 2011. There are 63 units to fit

Are the GPS units dependent on a GPRS uplink? At the more rural parts of the network that might mean a few black holes as there were with the wifi rollout.

Good point. Maybe not too much of an issue though with the distance between stops and the speed the train is moving at. It should be able to get a signal out at some point between stops.
