Cullen announcement on CIE / LUAS Fares
19 December 2006

Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen TD today (19 December 2006) announced that he has not accepted either the CIE request for increases in fares of up to 10% or the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) request for 3.45%.

Following detailed examination of the application from the CIE companies (Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann) and the RPA (LUAS), the Government decided that an increase of 2.75% in fares revenue for the CIÉ companies and Luas in 2007 was more appropriate. The Minister made the announcement following today's Cabinet meeting.

In reaching the decision, the Minister said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance of the impact on the customers of CIÉ and RPA with the need to sustain the financial health of the companies. In reaching his decision, the Minister said he wanted to encourage and support passengers who are choosing public transport as their commuting option.

It is understood that Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and RPA will now finalise the details of the new fares structures.

there should have been no increase at all, the rise should be based on value for money and there is none, they need to publicly sack people, the customer service is shoddy, timetable is poor, new trains still arent in service, hourly between cork and dublin wont be in place when they said, kent station in cork redevelopment was promised in Jan 2005 and still hasnt happened, booking on line was years late - A nice christmas present would be for martin cullen to resign - poor soul wasnt even allowed open the port tunnel

Inflation is over 4% so they didn't get anything in real terms

Well if you read the documents Cullen and the DoT get from IE you would think we have a great train service

The numbers are a fix and very selectively record performance and both IE and the DoT are in on the scam, we have challenged IE on one specific case where out of 36 hours a day (18 hours two directions) only 5 hours was logged for performance that the DoT got, I was told well thats what the DoT asked for.

I have a list in my mind of who to sack, Cullen has to go but there are a few senior people in IE who have made life a misery for passengers who need to go
