Question Overtaking on Hazelhatch to Parkwest 4 track.

I was just wondering if anyone knows when or if overtaking occurs on this 4 track section between Hazelhatch and Parkwest since the new timetable was introduced. I'm have only seen it happen two times before (but during the previous timetable) and the second time it only happened because the commuter train I was on was running 10 minutes late. I have never known of any over takings heading out of Heuston.

18:55 Heuston Newbridge is overtaken by the 19:00 to Cork

Its not clear from the timetable which trains overtake where

You are probably more likely to be overtaken Dublin bound

Over-taking isn't the only benefit, it also increases headway and operating speed.

The facility is little used. I have often travelled outbound from Heuston and encountered no traffic on any of the other 3 lines both before and after the recent timetable change.

The following overtaking moves are scheduled

Outbound (Daily including Sundays)
1900 Heuston/Cork overtakes 1855 Heuston/Newbridge

Inbound (Excluding Sundays)

0505 Cork/Heuston overtakes 0725 Kildare/Heuston
0615 Cork/Heuston overtakes 0743 Portlaoise/Heuston
0635 Galway/Heuston overtakes 0743 Portlaoise/Heuston
0710 Waterford/Heuston overtakes 0832 Newbridge/Heuston (not Saturday)
1730 Cork/Heuston overtakes 1950 Newbridge/Heuston

Inbound (Sundays)

1330 Cork/Heuston overtakes 1535 Kildare/Heuston
1530 Cork/Heuston overtakes 1735 Kildare/Heuston

Imcidentally the 1610 Heuston/Newbridge severely delays the 1625 Heuston/Limerick while the 1715 Heuston/Newbridge delays the 1725 Heuston/Limerick by about 12 minutes. Both of these stopping trains could easily be re-scheduled to leave Heuston at 1620 and 1720 respectively and be overtaken by following faster services. Both could probably terminate at Hazelhatch without undue inconvenience to Sallins and Newbridge passengers who have several alternative service options in any event. Such an arrangement would also allow sets return to Heuston within a much shorter time-frame and thus facilitate additional services without requiring additional resources.

Todays 1900 Heuston/Cork didn't overtake the 1855 Heuston/Newbridge

19:00 To Cork was within 2 minutes of right time throughout

The signaling trace would suggest you overtook at Sallins, the Dublin bound platform is designed to allow that now

The Cork service didn't overtake at Sallins since there was a train passing at the time on the Dublin line. I was on the Newbridge service and within about 2 minutes of arriving at Newbridge the Cork MK4 service passed the station. Yesterdays 1730 Cork/Heuston did overtake the 1950 Newbridge/Heuston.

While the Kildare side crossover at Sallins was moved to a point west of the station as part of the KRP re-signalling it is still not possible for a country-bound train to pass through Sallins while a train travelling in the same direction is standing on the Dublin-bound platform. The train being overtaken must remain in the loop until the overtaking train has passed through. (Same as before the KRP re-signalling)

Exactly the same arrangement applies at Portlaoise, except that the discussion applies to Dublin-bound trains.
