All I know is the 'situation' was resolved sometime late yesterday afternoon, early evening.

However phase two of the 'situation' will arise today, they will have a hard time to find someone to drive the rail train to the work site

Major Improvement Works on Cork - Cobh Line - Tuesday 14th Oct. to Wed. 19th of November 2008 by Corporate Communications

As part of our ongoing investment in railway infrastructure, major improvement works are planned for the Cork - Cobh line from Tuesday 14th October until Wednesday 19th of November.

As a result, all Cork-Cobh rail services will be suspended to facilitate this work and a special revised timetable for a substitute bus service (Check Times Here)will be provided on the route during this time.

Customers should note that bus journey times may vary due to traffic congestion.

The works will include:

- the upgrading of 11 platforms at 6 stations along the route.

- Laying of cable ducting for signalling, electrical and telecoms.

- The constuction of abutment for the new overbridge at Woodhill, including a retaining wall at the approach of the new bridge.

- Coastal defence work and landslip protection works at key sites along the route.

- the installation of a water main for Cork County Council.

- Signalling adjustments to facilitate the re-opening of the Cork-Midleton railway line.

Iarnród Éireann would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused during these essential works.

There seems to have been some sort of land collapse at the site of the Woodhill Bridge yesterday. The Lower Glanmire Rd was closed for much of the day. I don't know if it will have any effect on the rail works and their duration. Anyone?

Meanwhile, some 20,000 motorists have been left facing major disruption in Cork after a stretch of the Lower Glanmire Road in the city collapsed into the river Lee yesterday during construction work by a contractor working for Iarnród Éireann, writes Barry Roche, Southern Correspondent, in Cork.

The section of roadway near the Skew Bridge in Tivoli collapsed into the River Lee at about 11am yesterday when Ascon was carrying out work to broaden the roadway to link it with a new bridge being built over the Cork-Cobh railway line near Bellevue Villas.

It is understood piling work was carried out in the river to support a broadening of the road to accommodate the bridge and, in the course of excavating material inside the piled area, 30 metres of quay wall collapsed
