Cork-Heuston delay - debris on line by Corporate Communications


Friday 22 December, 17.30hrs

There is a significant delay to the 15.30hrs Cork-Heuston service at present.

A road traffic accident on a bridge over the line north of Templemore Station caused debris to fall onto the line.

The 15.30hrs Cork to Heuston struck this debris, causing mechanical damage which has stopped the train.

We are endeavouring to rectify the fault, and assess the condition of the bridge, to allow services to resume.

The 16.00hrs Heuston to Cork is also delayed as a result.

Well again the notice says 18:00 but at 18:20 it wasn't there the earlier one was up

They have gone to single line working Thurles Lisduff

Excellent useful detail in the notice again, as I said we had words with senior managers about the poor and slow response to making information available it seems to have paid off

Its really easy get the passengers off, pull the next Dublin bound Mk4 alongside, open the doors and place the wheelchair ramp across the gap

There is a significant delay to the 15.30hrs Cork-Heuston service at present.

A road traffic accident on a bridge over the line north of Templemore Station caused debris to fall onto the line.

The 15.30hrs Cork to Heuston struck this debris, causing mechanical damage which has stopped the train.

We are endeavouring to bring the train to Templemore Station to transfer passengers to alternative services.

There will also be delays of up to 40 minutes to other Cork, Kerry and Limerick services due to only one line being available through Templemore.

Friday 22 December, UPDATE 20.30hrs

There is a significant delay to the 15.30hrs Cork-Heuston service at present.

A road traffic accident involving a truck on a bridge over the line north of Templemore Station caused debris to fall onto the line.

The 15.30hrs Cork to Heuston struck this debris, causing mechanical damage which has stopped the train.

The train was brought back to Templemore Station, and passengers are transferred onto the delayed 17.30hrs Cork-Heuston.

There are also be delays of up to 60 minutes to other Cork, Kerry and Limerick services due to only one line being available through Templemore.

train full of Christmas passengers was left stranded in Co Tipperary tonight after hitting debris on a track.

The Dublin-bound train, travelling from Cork, was damaged after a lorry hit the rail bridge as it travelled underneath it.

Engineers are currently working at the scene to try to repair the train and move it to a nearby station where passengers will be transferred to another service.

The incident happened at around 5pm just 300 metres outside Templemore train station, near Thurles. The train, which left Cork at 3.30pm, was due to arrive in Heuston Station at 6.35pm.

Iarnród Éireann staff said the delay is indefinite.

"A lorry hit the bridge near Templemore, debris fell onto the track as the train approached it and it ran over the debris," said a spokesman. "The undercarriage of the train is damaged and engineers are working on the train at the moment."

More information has come to light

As many will know leaving Templemore Dublin bound there is a sharp right hand bend and there are 3 overbridges over the next 2 miles

Train rounded bend and sights the first bridge with only seconds to see the debris. Train was travelling at 85-90mph it it takes about 1400m to stop at that speed.

Mk4 set 4004 was involved, damage is serious and will require extensive repair, as aresult it is highly unlikely set 4004 will not be available in time for January 13th for the new timetable, the set was to be withdrawn for a week for suspension modifications in January it was always on edge to be serviceable in time and that was before this incident

It's lucky that wasn't far worse than slight damage to the undercarriage of the train.

That accident could have been very nasty indeed.
