Students in Cork Institute of Technology in conjunction with Irish Rail are undertaking a case study review of Dublin Cork passenger experience

What Irish Rail really needs to know are the views of those who fly, drive or take the bus between Dublin and Cork. THese are the people they need to attract in greater numbers.

Interestingly Aircoach have today commenced an express coach service on their existing Cork to Dublin route which completes the journey between the two city centres in 3 hours. (3 and a half hours Cork to Dublin Airport).

That sounds barely credible within the speed limits

252km between Dublin and Cork

149km with a speed limits of 100km/h for a bus
91km with a speed limits of 80km/h for a bus
12km with a lower speed limit of 30km/h to 60 km/h

That all adds up to just over 2h 50 mins.

So are they expecting incredibly benign traffic lights or are they building speeding into the schedule?

Quite frankly, at bad times of day, you could lose that at Dunkettle alone.

2.8km @ 60km/h = 0h03
236km @ 100km/h = 2h22
2.9km @ 60km/h = 0h03
5.2km @ 50km/h = 0h06
1.0km @ 30km/h = 0h02

Total 2h39 (congestion and toll plazas aside)

Only the express services are scheduled for 3 hours Cork-Dublin. Stopping services are scheduled to take 3h45.

The survey seems to think you can use a smartcard to travel from Dublin-Cork

All annual tickets are issued as smart cards

Monthly taxsavers for Dublin short hop are now smartcard as well with renewals issued via the smartcard action list, so you 'collect' your next months ticket a you pass through the gates

I saw this just last night funnily enough. I was looking for a cheap fare from Dublin to Cork. Bus Eirann takes about four hours so that was out of the question, the last thing I thought of was an Aircoach and I found this by accident. I knew they travelled to Belfast but hadn't realised they started this route. I see the fare from the city centre is only €22 return as well, which is a fantastic price IMO.

I happened to be on board a few weeks ago when a survey was taking place and gave them hell about the state of this train ,filthy dirty outside,no trolley appeared until past Limerick Junction and their prices are crazy ,toilets wet as usual,no mains sockets again,wi-fi a joke switched to O2,very uncomfortable seating it was like sitting on a board ,unruly children allowed roam up and down train,when we got on to the catering carriage told in no uncertain terms that it was for meal paying passengers only and to barge our way through train to get a hard seat, can you blame people using their cars with all this s**t going on. Get the finger out Leo!!
