For what its worth, this turned out in the end to be my second worse delay ever - from 6 years of daily commuting and about 25 years of weekly use.

The worst was a planned bus transfer when they were installing this signalling system where the bus replacing the 0633 service from Edgeworthstown to Longford was stymied by a half-inch of snow and arrived in at 11:30 making it a grand total of 3 hours late.

I ended up 2 hours 40 minutes late on Monday, the next worse was back in 2005 when one of the old Mark 2 trains hit a herd of cattle on a Friday night about 9 miles the up side of Edgeworthstown. I think I ended up a shade under 2 and a half hours late that time.

Amazingly, we hit a cow about a year ago in a 29K and while there was a large jolt (I was in the front car) and that horrible crackly sound we were only stopped for about 15 minutes while the driver hopped out and had a look at the train. I was impressed that time.

Problem it is far too hit and miss. It all depends on the circumstances but it is clear that there are occasions where Irish Rail does not do its best. Remember the time the train broke down and the passengers got off walked to the nearest town, got food and returned

Cows are strange, sometimes they bounce off other times the train will end up out of service for months.

Do they seriously give 'discount vouchers' to annual ticket holders as well? How would I ever use them if I only ever travel daily between Mullingar & Connolly - hence the annual ticket in the first place?????

I got my €6 voucher yesterday from IR even though I clearly stated in my complaint letter that it was no good to me as I use my Annual Ticket for all my train needs ie Mullingar to Dublin.

I know it's not much but can it be used by anyone else or donated to charity etc etc any ideas???

I got my grand total of €7 in vouchers yesterday. They have my name on them but I can't see what there would be to stop me from buying a ticket for somebody else with them.
