Default Mullingar train station

Has anyone any idea what the work been carried out on the old platform in Mullingar train station is for. This is in relation to the Athlone line side of the station. There is a new roof being put on to the station and the platform is being cleared. The old station on the opposite platform is not be altered. Is there a move on to open this railway. It would make sence to reopen the line and merge the offpeak Sligo service in with the offpeak Galway services and Westport services and sent one big train to connolly IMO.
