Am I right in thinking that both Heuston and Ashtown are closer to th Phoenix Park?
The only qualm I'd have about calling it Navan Rd would be that it could just about cause some confusion with M3 Parkway, which serves the road to Navan. But there's not much else around it to name it after. Maybe Dunsink? |

How about Ashbrook.
If you look at the OSI web site and select the Historic 6", you'll see across the canal is the name Ashbrook.

It was to be called River Road but Irish Rail in its wisdom renamed it to Phoenix Park
In practical terms it will end up being Navan Rd though some care will have to be taken with the possibility of the line to Navan opening. Irish Rail have a knack of renaming stations to confuse people. M3 Parkway was to be Pace (and the ticketing systems had Pace coded in http://www.railusers.ie/forum/attach...3&d=1283981141 ) Grand Canal Dock was to be Barrow Street (robo voice even announced it a few times) Clontarf Rd was Fairview Clongriffin was Baldoyle

There is a story behind that...
Stations should not be named after corporate titles or businesses, after all it will likely be the xxxxxxx stadium when Aviva's contract runs out.

GOOD!!!
I've always thought that "Phoenix Park" was a pointless, confusing and irrelevant station name. It's about damn time something was done about it. |

Why not call it "Dublin Airport" to really confuse the tourists?

How about Ashbrook and Phoenix Park, like Hazelhatch and Celbridge. The local area displayed first. Or they could name it Phoenix Park Racecourse.

Very capable of being mistaken for Ashtown. Ashbrook is also a housing esate at Ashtown station.
There is already "Racecourse" stop on the Luas Green Line (note in service yet). Potentially that would lead to confusion. Perhaps "Old Racecourse". The problem with "Navan Road" is that there are several stations on or adjacent to the Navan Road. Strictly speaking [/u]Ashtown[/u] station is in Pelletstown townland. PP station is in the Castleknock barony. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ba..._of_Dublin.jpg Witty / cynical comment: How about "Celtic Tiger" station - both of them have been dead for years.

Maybe we should ask Michael Martin to come up with a name. He seems to be plugged into the national consciousness at the moment.

Ashbrook is too similar to Ashtown and is likely to confuse
We are left with Navan Rd (most logical) or River Rd (as per original plan)

you could try auburn avenue,
The auburn avenue junction is beside it, a new pedestrian crossing at the auburn avenue junction just opened leaves people at the esso garage right beside it once they cross the junction they are about 3-5 minutes from the station! Naming it Auburn Avenue and highlighting it might convince people living in auburn avenue/parts of castleknock to start using it as their local station! Snap! I am going to suggest Auburn Avenue as well. My logic is this: For which residential areas is Phoenix Park the nearest station? The answer is the estates around Auburn Avenue and Peck's Lane.
I always knew this confusion would arise, and I planned to write to IR about it before the station opened. But I didn't get round to it. So I can't really say "I told you so!" In jest, what about "Not Phoenix Park"? Or (following an old custom for naming isolated country stations) "Phoenix Park Road"? |

While there is some credence to the naming of the station due to the relatively short half mile gap between it and the amenity of the same name(from their nearest points), I do think it could arouse confusion to a lot of people e.g. tourists and anyone else unfamiliar with that neck of the woods.

Makes sense what's the point of calling it Phoenix Park if the park itself is miles away from the station. Another thing isn't ashtown railway station itself closer to the park?
