A TOTAL of 58 submissions have been lodged on the Kildare Route Project and a public inquiry will start on 24 January, writes Henry Bauress.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen will have to consider the submissions and the report from Patrick Butler SC, who has been appointed as Inspector.

Labour Deputy Emmet Stagg said it was important “necessary procedures” were completed as soon as possible to enable construction begin on the €350m Route Project in the latter half of 2006, as is scheduled.

The KRP is expected to treble capacity on Kildare commuter lines into Heuston station by 2009.

Deputy Stagg has warned that the population level for which it is designed will be reached and exceeded shortly after its completion

The KRP will meet needs up to 2013 and then “we must move again”, Iarnrod Eireann spokesperson Barry Kenny told the Leader in November.

Interesting. Is this a reference to the Interconnector tie in?

I think its more a reference to possibly extending the 4 tracking to Sallins or beyond as the interconnector is already confirmed.

Mark G can verify this, but wasn't the 4 tracking meant to get as far as Sallins in original plans, like how the DART was to go as far as Kildare Town?

Yup it was going to Straffan at least with major works at Kildare, Newbridge and Sallins stations

Iarnrod Eireann did initially propose a Kildare Route Project which would have commenced at Inchicore and provided four-tracking to Straffan, with station works at Sallins, Newbridge and Kildare.

However, the proposed Interconnector project which Iarnrod Eireann plan in the medium term to further boost commuter capacity on the route, and across the Greater Dublin rail system, would result in works at the Inchicore end of the system being superseded in a relatively short timeframe.

As a result of this, and to ensure optimum cost-benefit from the project, it was decided to remove the Inchicore to Cherry Orchard and Hazelhatch to Straffan elements of the project, to be incorporated into the Interconnector project in the future.

However, some scope enhancements were also added, notably the addition of a station at Kishoge.
