My brother in law lost the back half of a car to a train at an unguarded crossing in Germany. He says he was dazzled by the setting sun.

My understanding of the rules for unguarded crossings is that you're supposed to stop and get out of your car, look along the line and listen for approaching trains. Normally you'll hear the hiss on the tracks when the train is still quite some way off.
