Default CIÉ ferry looks set to go to breakers

A tenuous link to rail hence here in the informal Canteen section.

Córas Iompair Éireann's MV Naomh Eanna which for around thirty years sailed from a pier not much more than a stone's throw from Galway's Ceannt station to the three Oileáin Árann (Aran Islands) may well meet her breaker in the near future.

Since retiring from her Atlantic career she has been at Dublin's Grand Canal Dock. There are efforts afoot to save her and she has been discussed in the Dá*l.

It may well be the case the vessel is still nominally owned by Córas Iompair Éireann.

Anyone with an inkling of an interest may wish to go and have a look at the vessel (not possible to board) but possible to walk close by on the land.

I wish all endeavours to save her well though disappointingly the odds seem very much stacked against her being saved.

One only has to look at the success that the MV Cill Airne (opposite the former North Wall rail station/ Convention Centre on North Wall Quay) has been to see the potential.

In its day the ferry was built with public monies so it is proper to see it going to good use if at all possible. Everything has a value, everything from the biro bought for a state office to a transport vehicle or vessel and going forward that is a precept that in my view needs to become a stronger one.

I did my Divemaster course at Flagship Scuba when they were based there about 15 years ago. Even back then, they were under constant threat of being moved on so the ship could be sent to the breakers. So I'm amazed it lasted so long.

While everything has a value, it is quite likely that at this point the scrap value of the Naomh Eanna is greater than any other possible value. It would be nice to see her put to use again but with so much vacant commercial property on dry land, it is hard to see how she can be a paying proposition.

If it was in better condition, they could put it on the Ennis line

The usual story - we'll probably just have to put up with a leaky row-boat on the Sligo line.

Good news of sorts for a change is that in the Seanad yesterday (Weds) the Minister granted a reprieve to the vessel till the end of next month to see if a business proposal can be formulated for her retention.

Just let's hope that no money will be taken from the budget of CIE in order to pay for this. It will be great if private money can be raised to restore and operate the Naomh Eanna in some form.

I'm a little ambivalent about preservation of old ships and just tieing them up as tourist attractions. A ship belongs at sea and it is a little sad to see them just sitting in a museum. I was very impressed on visiting the Asgard at Collins Barracks last year, but I couldn't help feeling that it would have been so much better to see her at sea.

I think it's good that the vessel has got a reprieve and fully agree that no CIÉ or public monies should be utilised. I think the vessel was owned by IÉ till 2012 and that a transfer took place then.

Did anything come of this after the reprieve?

There is an update dated May 15th on the "Naomh Eanna Trust" page on Facebook. Not necessary to have Facebook to view the page.
