Default Irish Times says something about a couple of billion for Metro North or something....

Here at Platform11 we do like to cover issues that are current, informative and ground breaking.

So, gentle readers, you may have been wondering why we're not getting too excited about the big Irish Times story of recent days.

This is why:

Yes, that does indeed read 18th March 2005.

Our report on Metro West is heading your way soon. Will it prove prophetic in two or three years time as well?

There was an editorial piece in Today's [Wednesday's] Irish Times pointing out that the Interconnector would have a bigger impact on passenger journeys and represented a far greater ROI, and that it should be moved above Metro North in terms of priority.

It also queried whether we need a Metro at all, but then sort of contradicted itself by saying that if we build one we should build one worth having and go for grand architecture in the stations and bundle in the green line upgrade from the word go.

A good article making a lot of good points, but sort of loses the run of itself towards the end.

Apologies if it's already been posted elsewhere.

That of course should be the plan from day one. You can imagine what Luas from Bray will be like. Instead of doing a Magician's act on it and pull away the cloak in a few years time the RPA should just go and issue a big press statement saying that they want a full-on Metro from Swords to Bray and they want it now.

It's what'll end up happening anyway but to me the RPA seem too scared to be too demanding on the DoF for fear of being told no. I don't understand that - they have got everything that they wanted so far.

Unlike the NRA who, just yesterday, asked the DoT and DoF for an extra €500 million per year so they could "speed up" their elements of Transport 21

linky

Quote:

The National Roads Authority (NRA) is to ask the Government for an additional €500 million per year, which it claims to need to speed up delivery of the National Roads programme.

Chairman of the authority, Peter Malone, said the money could be spent bringing forward projects from the end of the Government strategy Transport 21, starting and completing them considerably ahead of schedule.
