Upgrade Fares
Does anyone know what the current fare is to upgrade from standard to first if paid onboard the train?

As I understand it, it is the difference between a standard and first class ticket. This does not apply where the standard fare purchased is a web fare.

The upgrade is a flat number such that standard single + upgrade = first class price
Student/Faircard tickets pay the same flat amount to upgrade as do free travel pass holders Upgrades SHOULD be purchased before boarding unless the booking office is closed.

Before the fare changes last month Dublin-Cork charged €35 peak and €20 off-peak, peak being defined as trains booked to serve full meals. No idea now.
Note that web fares officially cannot be upgraded. Also, as Mark states you are supposed to buy your upgrade before you board the train and you can otherwise be issued a €100 penalty fare. In reality however you can ask the train host who will normally be happy to let you pay on board. |
