While in this case it's a safety issue, this is is one of those things that is a mystery as to why they can't get right. Stopping in the right place is one of those little things that could make such a difference to the passenger experience.
It is a right pain to unnecessarily have to walk an extra four car-lengths up a windy dark platform with the rail pouring down on a winter night. It is far worse for people with restricted mobility. How much effort is it to stop the train within 10 foot of any given stop.
