I thought aircon Mk3s couldn't be pushpulled with a Mark 3 DVT, unless the idea was that the coaches be wired for it during refit? In any event if 071s or 111s had to be used then they would have to haul anyway.

201s are only restricted on Rosslare/Sligo and Limerick branch lines. Given the work needed the cost of wiring would be nothing.
Some of the DVTs were scrapped years ago and one that was purchased to be displayed in Ennis so there was only 3 (possibly 4?) so maybe it was an option to get one.
