There are two solutions

The battery option is expensive and requires major modifications to the trams, messy and the tram would have to lug the battery around which in turn increases costs. May not be possible to modify current fleet.

Second is the embedded conductor rail which powers the tram through a fancy rail which is live only when under a tram. Expensive to install, expensive to maintain, doesn't like snow but is easy to modify the trams
