The key with the Northern suburban line (and maybe most other lines) is to arrive into Connolly by 8am(ish). Anytime I travel before then, things are fine. It's services arriving after that time that have to crawl from Clontarf Road to Pearse st., and that's where most of the delays build up.
I'm not sure there is ever a good time in the evening, but up to 7.30 seems to have delays
Note to self: Get up earlier! Go home later!
