I can rewrite that in some very simple language

If you can obtain a ticket before travelling you must, if you cannot, e.g. station unstaffed or the TVM can't cope with your choice e.g. child ticket,<link to SI 109 1984 section 4>

If you are travelling without a ticket you must obtain a ticket at the earliest oppertunity.

IE staff have no power of detention

There are a lot of posters and notices from IE which set out to intimidate passengers when in fact IE have no legal right to fine you if you board at a unstaffed station provided you make reasonable efforts to buy a ticket when you can

I have boarded at 3 unstaffed stations in the last 2 months paid other end no hassle
