DART 25: Poetsâ€™ Corner Poetry Competition

For over 22 years Poetsâ€™ Corner has been a regular feature on all DART trains, bringing poetry to daily travellers. To mark the ongoing success of Poetsâ€™ Corner, IarnrÃ³d Ã‰ireann is inviting submissions for a poetry competition.

What is it about?
Writing a successful poem in English or Irish, which will be printed on posters and displayed on DART trains and on station platforms.

Who may enter?
Anyone over 18 who is resident in Ireland or is an Irish citizen. Only one entry per author is allowed.

What length of poem?
No longer than 19 lines, including line spaces, e.g. four four-line stanzas, 19 lines with no spaces, and so on.

Is there a theme?
The poem must relate to DART or to rail travel in general.

When is the deadline for entries?
Submissions must be sent by post only to DART Poetsâ€™ Corner Competition, P.O. Box No. 16127, Dublin 2 no later than 14 August 2009.

What can I win?
The three winning poems will be awarded a prize of â‚¬500 each and they will be displayed on trains and on station platforms for thousands of DART travellers to enjoy.

How do I enter?
Simply click here to download an apllication form. Send this form along with your submission by post only to DART Poetsâ€™ Corner Competition, P.O. Box No. 16127, Dublin 2 no later than 14 August 2009.

Rules:

Entrants must be over 18 and Irish citizens or resident in Ireland.
There is no entry fee.
The poem must relate to DART or to rail travel in general.
The poem can be in English or Irish.
Only one entry per author is allowed.
Poems must be no longer than 19 lines, including line spaces, and submitted on one A4 page, e.g. four four-line stanzas, 19 lines with no spaces, and so on.
Poems must be the original work of the person entering the competition.
The title of the poem should appear on the top of the page.
Poems must not have been published prior to entering the competition and should not appear in print, on a website, self-published or broadcast in any form before the competition results are announced in October 2009.
Poems must be typed. In formatting the poem, please make legibility your first concern.
All submissions must be accompanied by an entry form.
The name of the author should appear on the entry form only, and not on the page on which the poem appears. No name should appear on the poem submitted.
Submissions will be accepted only by post no later than 14 August 2009 to DART Poetsâ€™ Corner Competition, P.O. Box No. 16127, Dublin 2.
No email submissions will be accepted.
Poems will not be returned to entrants, and once submitted, cannot be altered. Entrants should retain a copy of their work.
Receipt of poems will not be acknowledged.
The judgesâ€™ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
The winning poems will be displayed in poster form on DART trains and on station platforms.
No employee of IarnrÃ³d Ã‰ireann, Poetry in Motion or Poetry Ireland may enter the competition.
Copyright will remain with the competitor, but IarnrÃ³d Ã‰ireann reserves the right to first publication, as it sees fit.
Submission of a poem implies the competitorâ€™s acceptance of the conditions set out above.
The three prize-winners will be expected to attend an Awards Ceremony in Dublin in Autumn 2009
