Louth County Council do not have a resident conservation or heritage officer; external consultants recommended this building for inclusion on the record of Protected Structures. Local councillors voted for it not to be protected and the landowners wish to demolish it to build a shed with a 20 year lifespan.

Re: Greenore disgrace

Under the present system, the Architectural Heritage division of the Department of the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government, tenders out the survey work for its National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. Before doing so, a list is compiled, along with relevent mapping, of the structures and street features to be surveyed. Therefore, if the Greenore Hotel was not on the list for inclusion in the NIAH for Co. Louth (to be published 2006/7), then it is the fault of the Heritage Service as much as it is the County Council. The latter appears to have a somewhat haphazard attitude towards heritage anyway, just look at some of the buildings in Carlingford.

Still, whether anyone sees it or not, it would be nice to have had it there for redevelopment and re-use in the future.
