Incident at Drogheda overnight 04/07/2012

Just wondering if anyone knows what this was?
All Northern suburban services this morning were 1/2 capacity (i.e normal 8 carriage services operated as 4 car services). Led to full services south of Donabate, but due to summer holidays was not too bad....

Best report is from an RUI member in Drogheda, train derailed inside depot blocking some trains from leaving.

Happened overnight, so it was before 5am when Irish Rail put up the story

No trains were able to leave the depot (or access platform 3) during the (Wednesday) morning peak. Some empty stock worked from Dublin to assist.

Derailment was minor but strategically located and involved the partial derailment a 3-car ICR set on a set of hand operated points.

Assume minior means it can be repaired here and not have to go to UK?

Wasn't the Portlaoise one to do with hand operated points?

Looks like a very low speed affair - I would be surprised if the set sustained sufficient damage to keep it out of service for more than a few days (if that !)

In the case of Drogheda and the previous incident in Portlaois the location of the derailment was the real issue. Previous incidents in Fairview went unnoticed as there was another way in and out.

We don't know if this was a simple trap point derailment, an on train issue, e.g wheel profile, axle failure or a points issue. No photos from yesterday so no informed speculation either

I was on the 7.10 Dundalk train that morning, there was a big crowd of men on one of the tracks just outside platform 3 in Drogheda obviously examing what happened, didn't look to be overly major from what I seen.Train journey was pretty bad from then on because the train was 4 carriage, only people who got seats that morning were Dundalk passengers and most Drogheda passengers, some Donabate passengers couldn't get on the train it was so bad. Fair play to the driver though, came on the radio about 4 times to explain what had happened and was very apopogetic.
