Dublin to Westport

Visiting Ireland in a few weeks and plan on taking the train from Dublin to Westport, but want to stop in Castlebar for a little while on the way. Will I need two separate tickets (Dublin-Castlebar and Castlebar-Westport), or will one ticket suffice.

You will need 2 tickets if your purchase the ticket online as online tickets do not allow break of journey.

If you purchase a normal single or return from in person at the booking office/ticket machine you may break your journey en route provided you complete the journey same day, or next day if the train you leave at Castlebar is the last train of the day.

In case you may be travelling from England/Scotland/Wales there are all-in SailRail tickets available from any station on the National Rail network to stations here (e.g. Castlebar) via the Holyhead-Dublin ferry route.

The tickets nearly always work out better value than separate rail and ferry tickets.

These tickets can be booked at the ticket office in a staffed station or online via the Arriva Trains Wales website.

Wishing you a pleasant holiday.

I could be stating the obvious but book Dublin-Westport return tickets for the dates online as booking separate tickets will cost more with a 2 euro charge. Online fares to both Castlebar and Westport are the same so you just get off at Castlebar and pay the 8 euro for the single to Westport lather in the day and use the return ticket from Westport whenever your coming back. In case you don't know book the online fare when you know you exact dates for cheapest fares.

Thanks for the recommendations and info.

I checked the automated fare calculator that was linked, it seems that the regular fare is 38.70 each way (77.40 total).

However, if I buy online, for two tickets to get to Westport (Dublin-Castlebar and Castlebar-Westport), even with the surcharges for online and credit card, it still only comes out to 9.99 each way plus an extra 7.70 for Castlebar to Westport, or, around 30.00 total. That seems like a big discrepancy compared to the rate in the automated fare calculator, am I missing something?

My planned travel dates are Jan 29 (to Westport) and Jan 30 (returning).

Online fares are discounted fares subject to quotas and vary are a result at the exact instant you check.

Fare calculator is for cash fares only per the official legal approvals

The fare calculator does come with a warning

"Short term promotions and internet fares are not included."
