Following a determination by the National Transport Authority, revised fares will apply on some services from 1st December 2017.

Iarnród Éireann advises customers that, following a determination by the National Transport Authority, revised fares will apply on some services from 1st December 2017. For December Taxsaver renewals, revised fares will apply from 6th November.

Full Iarnród Éireann fare determination details are available to download here.

The NTA has highlighted the following changes:

A range of Iarnród Éireann fares will increase by an average of 1.2%. However, a number of fare types will see no increase
Cork commuter fare structure simplified, with some customers seeing a fare reduction of up to 25%
Intercity express single fares reduced by an average of 5% to improve value and reduce the differential between the Dublin Short Hop Zone and Intercity zone

Full information on all public transport determinations are available at the NTA website.

For once I seem to be a major beneficiary, with my monthly ticket coming down by €17

It does finally appear the NTA is starting to unpick the revenue maximizing fares Irish Rail had in place

Cork Middleton will now be the same as Cork Cobh, and Cork Cobh fare is going down as well

Reductions on the intercity single fares also

I'm sure Cobh Connect's new service (start tomorrow) played a role in the fare changes at Cobh.

Can anyone explain the InterCity zones that are contained in the appendix to that document.

How can I find out which zone a station pairing falls into?

Our tool will give you the codes

http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_in..._calc_2017.php

First letter is the distance code A-Z
Second is the fare type E/1/2/L

We also show the distance code to be used if the NTA's revised distance bands were employed (still waiting, 5+ years...)

I'll leave it to others to decide what surprises them, but for my own part, the introduction of a Cork City Green Zone for buses that included Mallow, while Mallow doesn't have Leap card usage on the train, could threaten commuter numbers between Mallow and Cork.

The €600 Dublin add-on for point-to-points is a major improvement for those who are trying to change onto Dublin Bus or Luas. Good to see that they've avoided sticking the boot into long-distance commuters for one year anyway.

The next step should be to allow you to use Bus Eireann services on a rail pass. This would be particularly useful for Longford commuters where the last bus of the day is nearly 4 hours after the last train.

The €600 top up won't be available until late 2019 meanwhile we have the €450 city centre top-up.

The disparity between Sallins and Newbridge increases as the SHZ annual fares are reduced by 5.8% while to point-to-point remain unchanged.
