Mark 28-04-2008 14:15

Have they entered service on the Waterford line yet or is that still September starting date?

Mark Gleeson 28-04-2008 14:16

Not physically authorised to even travel the line yet

17:35 to Carlow is meant to be a 3 car 22k once the depot in Portlaoise is fully go

Oisin88 29-04-2008 21:40

Have they started getting lazy with the destination displays on the 22Ks out of Heuston? Spotted one leaving at 18:10 today with no destination and might have seen one yesterday as well....

RadarControl 30-04-2008 07:36

The 6:30 out of Portlaoise is a 2x3 car set. Also not sure but it looked like the 6:30 from Carlow was a 2200 set. Only saw it as it came into Heuston this morning.

Edward Ryan 30-04-2008 09:11

Passing Heuston earlier saw a 22K that seemed to be operating a Kildare commuter service.

Carlow arrived 20 late - old orange train - behind the Limerick.

Any update on when the new trains will be running?

Mark Gleeson 11-09-2008 18:35

The 6:30 Carlow Dublin service, the 17:35 & 20.05 Dublin Carlow. However the 20:05 may not be

The 9:30 to Waterford and 13:05 return services are the new trains as well.

Is the 15:05 service to Waterford still operated with the old train?

Mark Gleeson 22-12-2008 18:03

The 11:20 and 15:05 are still Mk3 operated services but won't be beyond the first few weeks of January.

There are 5 more 6 car sets to enter service, Galway line needs 1, Waterford 2, Tralee 1. The 5th frees up two 3 cars and gets all Mallow Tralee services converted

I was on this train a few weeks back and it was still a Mark III.

The 1735 to Carlow is a six car (2x3) set.

Great, thx.
I will be travelling on the 10th jan, so I guess MK3 will still be on the 1505. What about the 16:25? I've been trying to get on the new train for some time now, :) haven't had any luck until now.

Kilkea 19-02-2009 13:47

Any idea if all the 22ks for the Waterford line are now in service, or are there more due to come on? The 18.25 service out of Heuston in particular is still the old train, and also the 07.35 out of Plunkett.

There are only 3 Mk3 links left, Galway, Waterford and Ballina/Westport on the weekends.

There are another 39 ICR's to enter service

sublimity 19-02-2009 14:19

Could some of the remaining Mk3s be moved to the Limerick - Waterford/Rosslare line? I heard not all the Mk3s are for sale.

Thomas Ralph 19-02-2009 16:27

They'd go down through the Cahir viaduct I'd wager.

Mark Gleeson 19-02-2009 16:33

As far as I know no buyers for the Mk3s

sublimity 19-02-2009 18:32

They should keep them, or most of them anyway

dowlingm 20-02-2009 00:03

How about sell the DDs and replace them with Mk3s :D

Thomas Ralph 20-02-2009 10:47

Nothing wrong with the DDs (other than putting locos on fire)

dowlingm 21-02-2009 03:17

Isn't that partly to do with IE/NIR running fewer, longer sets than originally planned for, with consequent demand on the HEP?

Guys if we want to get in to the technical issues, http://www.railusers.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=6870

netlordr23 26-04-2009 15:47

Mk3's still running the route?

Colm Moore 26-04-2009 17:01

Yes, a limited number of Galway and Waterford services are still done by Mark 3 sets.

Why is there a problem with that? Mk3's are decent carriages and are not that old. All they need is a small refurbishment in inchicore. IE are idiots, blaming the current climate for the removal of all loco hauled trains (Mk3s)
I was in correspondence with Mr Fearn recently and thats what he said.

I get the Waterford 18.25 service daily which is a Mk3. It is filthy dirty and the PA system seems to be barely working. Various carriages shudder violently on certain parts of the line and create a deafening noise.
I am praying for it to be replaced with a 22k but not sure when/if this is going to happen.

I'd wager that IE are deliberately failing to maintain the Mk3s because they believe they don't have a future.
To put it another way, they are trying to turn the public against the Mk3s by doing this.

sean 28-04-2009 14:39

Quite possible - I think they did the same thing with the Mk2ds before the introduction of those wonderful "Intercity" 29,000s  on the Sligo line in 2006.

Kilkea's problems sound like the Mk3s are in crap condition for the want of proper maintenance.

It'll be a crying shame if those carriages are let go; they have decades left in them.

Mark Gleeson 28-04-2009 15:21

48 are being refurbished and kept

I don't see the attachment to the Mk3, yes a good piece of engineering but its a 40 year old design. The heating and AC was always a serious weakness

And they're all going to be used on the Belfast line?

Kilkea 15-05-2009 08:52

anyone have word on when this additonal 22k will come into service for the Waterford line? I assume that it will cover the 18.25 out of Heuston?

sublimity 16-05-2009 09:10

You should be thankful that all your trains to Waterford are InterCity stock. Spare a thought for the Rosslare customers who haven't seen an InterCity service since July 2004.

Mark Gleeson 16-05-2009 09:35

Deliveries are still on going

Still two more 3 car sets and 5 6 car sets to enter service

Cork is top of the list for a 3 car set

22k came into service on the 18.25 from Heuston last week, the ticket guy told me that that was the end of the MK3 on the line but not sure if they are still running them during the day off peak.

What use would Cork have for a 3 car IC set? My understanding is that everything South of Mallow is either short-haul trains or CAF Intercity sets.

Thomas Ralph 25-05-2009 15:40

Cork-Tralee

The Cork based Mk3 set kept spare to cover for Mk4 failures is as a matter of routine drafted in to cover Mallow Tralee due to the the lack of railcars

On paper a single 3 car ICR will release 4 2700 coaches which fills the Midelton void
