New trains - Do they really exist??

so i needed to travel to dublin from sligo this week and wanted to bring my bike. i checked the irish rail website to see what times the new trains were running at and found a news item saying they ran on the 11.05 from dublin, and the 14.55 from sligo.
so i got the 14.55 and found it was a useless commuter train and i couldn't bring my bike, even though the train was empty and its a relatively small bike.
I told the staff about the info i got on the internet, and they said no the new trains have never run on this service at this time.
so i had to leave my bike in the station, and continue to use ridiculously overpriced public transport when i got to dublin.

Now on the way back this morning, I rang the 1850 help line and asked what services the new trains were running on, and the man said it was on the 11.05 service. So i thought great, ill finally get to see these fancy new trains, only to find, yet again i was stuck on a useless pile of commuter train rubbish.

is it too much to ask for accurate information from irish rail?? especially with these new ticket prices.

Mark Gleeson 17-01-2008 15:27

New train currently operate as follows

6:55 and 8:55 Sligo Dublin
17:05 and 19:05 Dublin Sligo

Those are the four busiest trains between Sligo and Dublin

There is no notice on the Irish Rail website listing any services operated by the new train, the only notice was the press release of the first day which was removed when the train began to run the 8:55/17:05 which is responsible action by Irish Rail

Irish Rail don't advertise that they carry bikes on any Sligo service at the moment nor do they advertise the fact the new train is actually in service, doing so prevents trouble when the new train isn't available again can't fault that

Bikes have been carried on the 8:55 and 17:05 services since March 07 and that remains the case

peteretep 18-01-2008 17:17

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply.
To be honest, I never imagined that it would be that difficult to bring a bike on a train, I've seen people with bigger suitcases!
I found the info about the services here - http://www.iarnrodeireann.ie/news_ce...ew&news_id=314
Ok I know its in the archive, but I knew I saw the information somewhere.

I may be going mad but I was sure I checked this website recently and it said bikes were carried on the 14.55 service

Mark Gleeson 18-01-2008 17:33

When the new train entered service we updated our website to reflect the change, we have updated the bikes page 3 times since December 19th with respect to Sligo, the trial run then when the new train replaced the old one and then when the second entered service and it will be updated on Sunday when we know the exact list of bike friendly trains for Monday, Irish Rail have enough certified trains for it but not all are in Connolly

We are running normally 1-2 days behind since the information has to get back to us, Irish Rail don't tell anyone, even there own staff beyond the driver don't know

The roster does allow the 6:55 service to run 11:05, 14:55 in addition to the 19:05 it may or may not run. If Irish Rail break there own internal roster it makes life difficult

The link to the story is to the iarnrod eireann website, and is to a archived news item, not a current one. It takes some finding

Great to hear the sligo line has been allocated three 6 car sets.badly needed esp at peak times. does anyone know if there will be a dining/first class carriage on the 6 car sets for sligo? - thats on the proper 6 car sets which apparently haven't even arrived in the country yet tut tut

Mark Gleeson 23-01-2008 10:19

1 full 6 coach set with first and catering is supposed to be allocated. Its been posted numerous times

Guys just on Wednesday when i was travelling to Carrick-on-Shannon there was no new 22k train for the 13:05 service just the 29000 train. The new train reversed out of the platfrom and into the shed beside platfrom1. Was there a new train for the 11:05 service on Wed because that to did the same action..

Mark Gleeson 25-01-2008 20:52

The 11:00, 13:00, 17:00 and 19:00 Sligo Dublin
The 7:05, 9:05, 13:05 and 15:05 Dublin Sligo

Remain 29k operated until further notice

Our bikes page lists the bike friendly trains - the new ones http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_info/bikes.php

KSW 26-01-2008 10:16

Just one thing the 11:05 Dublin Sligo service was it just this particular day it was'nt operating(25th)

The real question can i expect to see it operating Monday's 11:05?

Mark Gleeson 28-01-2008 20:47

The sooner all of the 22ks are in service the better. On the irishrail website it says 'intercity' under service for ALL trains to and from sligo. still 4 trains each way are operated by those bloody commuters

Saturday Service

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone happens to know what time the new trains run on the saturday service from Connolly to Sligo?

Thanks

Cait

Mark Gleeson 01-02-2008 15:56

If its listed as carrying bikes its one of the new ones

http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_info/bikes.php

cait 01-02-2008 16:09

Great thanks for the fast response

Mark Gleeson 01-02-2008 16:16

The 11:05/15:00 have a question mark over it on Saturday, it should be but it might not be

ThomasJ 04-02-2008 07:52

just heard on the radio that the 22ks are being unveiled again today. Does this mean the remainder of the railcars are coming into service today?

Mark Gleeson 04-02-2008 08:34

Today is the first day where all services Dublin - Sligo are operated by the new fleet

Of course this was meant to happen last autumn

Mark Gleeson 04-02-2008 09:00

Red carpet is out for what appears to be the 11:05 to Sligo, platform 3 Connolly

James Shields 04-02-2008 10:00

Red carpet was out with Irish, Japanese and Korean flags, and a big arch over the gate saying "welcome aboard". But not for passengers on the 9.05, apparently - there were announcements telling them to use platform 1.

Mark Gleeson 04-02-2008 10:02

One gets the feeling its worth the trip to Maynooth to try it out, again

ACustomer 04-02-2008 10:31

Does this mean that there will be a Ministerial or some other kind official "launch" each time a route is converted to 22k operation. Fits in with the tendency to have about 5 re-announcements of most infrastructure projects.

Thomas J Stamp 04-02-2008 10:49

Same happened on the Cork line. There is a considerable amount of guilt in the department and IE over the 29k debacle on the Sligo route so maybe that is why there is such a thing today about it.

Of course, having faster, more reliable trains on this route brings its own problems, and no red carpet is going to fix that soon:D

ACustomer 04-02-2008 11:24

"There is a considerable amount of guilt in the department and IE over the 29k debacle on the Sligo route " Aw come on! Those guys never feel guilty about anything. Smugness, complacency, and so on... but if they ever had any feelings of guilt about the shorcomings of public transport they would all have had breakdowns long ago.

This morning at Connolly, the flags were gone, the red carpet was nowhere to be seen and a good owl 29000 commuter railcar awaited those travelling on the 09.05 to Sligo.

O, if only IE were as good at timetabling as they are at theatrics.

James Shields 06-02-2008 11:34

The 9.05 was a 29k again this morning. This means that not only are Sligo passengers getting a sub-standard service, commuters on actual commuter routes are being subjected to short trains and excessive overcrowding.

Mark Gleeson 06-02-2008 11:35

There are sufficent 22k trains available to cover all 8 services

dowlingm 06-02-2008 23:11

but are there sufficient serviceable 22ks?

Colm Moore 06-02-2008 23:21

But are there sufficient serviceable 22ks, not on the Limerick route.

John J 25-02-2008 21:02

Exactly 3 weeks on from the "launch" - 09.05 Connolly-Sligo is still 29000 commuter railcar

The 05.45 up service from Sligo was 22000 but arrived 30+ mins late at Connolly

22k on Sligo line

Are Dublin-Sligo trains now 100% 22K and if not is there a date for it happening?

Mark Gleeson 13-04-2008 18:41

One train each way 7 days a week are not

General laziness within Irish Rail is the reason

ThomasJ 27-04-2008 14:58

Just spotted a three coach 22k heading inbound on the sligo line. Good to see they have started to run three coaches on the sligo line meaning they can assign the rest of the intercity railcars to the sligo line and put the commuter railcars back where they belong.

Mark Gleeson 27-04-2008 15:07

Been a 3 car running for months on the 7:05 service

Tuesday May 6th is the date for full service
