The Sidney Parade bug is really quite simple as IE changed the spelling from Sidney (correct) to Sydney (incorrect but consistent) the voice recordings don't have one for Sydney Parade. Version 8 (our numbers not IE) which appeared on Monday last also has the bug
The signs are at the right height there is a requirement that they can be viewed even if the platform is full of people, once you have seat you are fine The maps is just plain strange, its so simple, you need 998 maps We have received no response to earlier complaints from the suburban office and the matter will be referred to a higher level tomorrow in fact |

16:08 Bray Howth No maps, PIS or announcements Also showing wrong destination on rear "Bray" 16:20 Bray Howth No destination show on rear coach 8401 17:15 Bray Howth Lead coach 8117 was devoid of maps Rear was not showing a destination but Out of Service |
You can always read tube station / London signs!
You *ALWAYS* see a very large number of signs go past your window in any below / above ground station in London.
Why can't IE do this too ? It's not rocket science.. you put up a larger number of bigger signs that are actually ledgable without binoculars! Also, why can't they be backlit / front lit?! |

17:50 Pearse Drogheda No external side displays working 17:15 Bray Malahide No external electronic displays working Rear coach showing Out of Service as the destination (same train 4 days in a row now with OOS on the back but different coaches) 8613/14/15/16 today 17:25 Bray Howth Rear coach showing "Bray" 17:45 Bray Howth No destination shown on rear coach |
DART at aprox 17:50 @ Pearse heading towards Bray.
No voice announcements except "This train is for Bray" at seemingly random intervals. LED maps working perfectly. this is the first time I've seen one work! Scrolling display was also correct and accurate. |
Well if that was the 17:54 Pearse to Bray which showed up late I was onboard
Thats normal behaviour if the train is led by the older LHB units, the maps work and the displays but it won't state the station name. The driver can't shut the system down if it goes wrong from the lead cab |
ah that makes sense now.
Seems a pity that they can't just hook it up to the PA on the LHB units. |

8.05 Greystones Howth No PIS or announcements, no printed maps either in coach 8602 17:25 Howth Bray No destination show on front coach 8405 17:15 Brau Malahide Showing Bray as destination on rear 17:50 Pearse Dundalk No external displays working 29x15/05 17:45 Bray Howth No destination show on rear coach |
Who makes this/these announcement/PIS systems?
Is it one system across the entire fleet or do we have a Mitusi system, a CAF system and an Alstom system? Also, in Barcelona I noticed a system similar to some of the DARTs that announced in a very polished voice in Spanish and Catalan "Chime" (next station) "proxima estaciĆ³n" (female) followed by a gruff male voice with the station name. It was comical! The other funny bit is the Spanish vs Catalan bilingual signage. Sometimes the only difference is one accent or a single letter changes. |

8:05 Greystones Howth All was well till Sidney Parade Next Station <silence> All the Air Con units suffer from this bug 17:15 Bray Malahide Showing Bray as the destination on rear (6 days running now) 17:25 Howth Bray Map display system gave up at Pearse as did the electronic display Strangely the announcements kept working apart from Sidney Parade The now classsic Next Station <silence> Also showing Howth as the destination on rear 19:05 Howth Greystones Announcements and displays not working 8401/8201/8608/8607 21:48 Bray Malahide Rear coach showing Bray as destination 22:10 Greystones Malahide Rear coach showing Greystones as destination 22:20 Howth Bray No destination shown in front Announcements and displays working but displays showing only destination no next station No maps in coach 8401 8401/8201/8608/8607 22:30 Pearse Maynooth External displays switched on for about 2 seconds and died 29x18+21 |
Arrrghhh, so close but IE manage to screw up again!
On the 09.55 Clonsilla-Pearse this morning the PIS all worked spiffingly until we departed from Broombridge. Upon departing there the audible PIS went silent and the LED displays just kept scrolling "8" and then "06", repeating continuously. The system snapped out of it's malaise when the "The next station is Drumcondra" announcement bellowed and all returned to correct operation (I was going to write 'normal' but normal for IE is not 'correctly operational'). Car no. was 29108.
Other balls ups I spotted today; 11.13 DART Tara-Bray, car 8633 (and whatever it was coupled to) had no side displays at all functioning. 10.23 Connolly-Pearse (don't know origin), car 29412 and the rest of the train had no side displays in order. I actually only saw 1 train with everthing correct on it today. |
Which DMUs have PIS fitted?
Do all DMUs have some sort of PIS system fitted?
Does it operate on non-Dublin commuter services? E.g. Cobh-Cork-Mallow. |
Currently PIS systems are available on these routes
Longford-Maynooth-Connolly-Bray Dundalk-Drogheda-Connolly-Bray Malahide/Howth-Bray/Greystones Bray Rosslare appears available if service is operated by a 29000 as of Dec 06. Dublin Sligo is still unknown. Kildare Heuston is not available On train displays and announcements available only on 29000 series units despite 2800 series being fitted also. No PIS fitted units are allocated commuter to services beyond the Pale |
It'd be reasonable to expect this system to be available on IE coaches regardless of wheather beyond the Pale or not.
Are the 2600s and 2700s being retrofitted with the system at some stage? |

No PA, no PIS, No Maps 8616/15/14/13 |
Its much worse than we thought
After a little research by Thomas and myself we can now confirm that
Sidney Parade Salthill and Monkstown Dun Loaghaire Sandycove and Glasthule All suffer from the Next Station <silence> bug, this bug is present on 40 DART coaches No's 8621-8640/8521-8540, the maps and displays work fine (ok so they blank for 30 seconds occasionally) Our working assumption is that the spelling/abbreviations of the stations where changed leading to a database/filesystem problem of no matching audio clip We only have confirmed Pearse Sandycove so we assume others are effected also and a field trip will be required to get the full list BTW if IE are reading this rename the audio files...... |

This is just at ridiculous proportions now
This is an absolute Joke. Its clear IE cant get this right. No wonder people have no confidence in the system. Imagine a poor tourist trying to use the Dart/Suburban. IEs inaction on this issue makes it clear they dont give a crap. This is what drives me mental. Do we know if there is any work going on behind the scenes to fix this display problem once and for all ? I have the sinking feeling there is NOONE in IE who has taken on the responsibility of getting each and every trains software fixed and standardised and WORKING. God Almighty !

|
Damn we have been waiting with a camera to catch one with a stupid destination on the Kildare line
Still no PIS is in breech of the adopted accessibilty guidlines in fact its in breech of almost the entire section 13 |
Yeah I noticed that myself was on the 19:45 Heuston-Carlow this evening and the front displays were displaying. The second set which arrived when we got to hazelhatch was not displaying anything atall
(This might be slightly off topic but when i was leaving I saw a MK4 set parked at platform 8 I think, looking very well, side displays brightly displaying, that orange vision is quite a blinding colour. didn't see what the display said though!) |
