I came back up from Limerick yesterday and was well impressed with the 4 tracking efforts along the way into Heuston, but one thing struck me as we passed new station after new station . . . what is it with the "Place 1/Place 2" naming of the new stations ? I can't remember the names, but it seemed that lots of the stations we passed through had identity issues and had two names.

Are they *really* in the middle of several townlands or are IE trying to keep everyone happy in the locality at the expense of complicating the station names ?

And finally, after passing all these Place 1/Place 2 stations we shot through somewhere called Place 1 & Place 2 - what's the subtle distinction between the use of "&" and "/" ?

They're planning to do it on the Belfast line..

Dublin Connolly & North Strand
Malahide & Streamstown
Donabate & Ballisk
Milverton & Skerries
Balbriggan & Stephenstown
Laytown & Bettystown
Drogheda for Termon Abbey
Dundalk and Priorstown for Ballybarrack.

There. ;)

Why the distinction? A few years and some lazy planners. :p

Could be worse the 1980's war on the soutside, the Monkstown crew got troublesome. Back in July 1984 Salthill station reopened, since Salthill had closed Seapoint had become Seapoint and Monkstown

Its now Seapoint then Salthill and Monkstown

Local developers (Treasury, Carroll, O'Callaghan etc) and marketing pressure perhaps?.. Expect the name Clonburris to appear somewhere soon.

They could do with simplifying a lot of the names:

'Clondalkin / Fonthill' which should either read 'Fonthill' or possibly 'Clonburris'

'Leixlip Louise Bridge' to 'Leixlip'

'Leixlip Confey' to 'Confey'

Hopefully the 'Howth Junction' name will be dropped soon enough.

'Pace M3' to 'Pace'

'Phoenix Park' to 'Navan Road'

'Liffey Junction' (Future) to something a bit more interesting and

'Clontarf Road' to 'Clontarf'

Im very happy to see 'High Street' has changed to 'Christchurch'. Even if the location hadnt changed it would still have made sense to name it 'Christchurch'.

Off topic but why is Seapoint Rugby club in Cabinteely and Monkstown Rugby club in Sandymount?

The stations are

Kildare. Simple.

Newbridge. Simple.

Sallins & Naas. Naas is a much bigger town (20,044 against 3,806)

Hazelhatch & Celbridge. Celbridge is a much bigger town (17,262 against ribbon development down some country roads)

Adamstown. Simple.

Kishoge. Simple.

Clondalkin / Fonthill. They couldn't quite keep the name Clondalkin as the new station has move quite a bit. The Fonthill name ties in with the Fonthill Road from Liffey Valley to Newlands Cross and needs to tie in with the Metro West naming.

Parkwest & Cherry Orchard (the old station was Cherry Orchard & Parkwest). Agains the station has moved and as the canal and railway have divided the two areas for the last 150-200 years, the identities are quite different. For much of that period the only connections were Cloverhill Road and Le Fanu Road and Sarsfield Road - one bridge in 5km.

Dublin Heuston - so as to distinguish it from the other main terminii. The Heuston bit is strictly political.
