I wonder does Irish rail have any proposal to introduce the low fares on the northern line. There are lots of posters in Belfast Central of £10 pound day return fares on trains from Monday to Saturday on offpeak services. This would help generate revenue and make the service popular

Its coming, and I'd guess there would be a quick phone call from Brian Cowen shortly afterwards telling Irish Rail to be 'patriotic'

NIR's setup is overly complex

You must purchase online 3 days or more in advance
You get a docket in the post
You swap that for a ticket at the booking office
No reserved seat

Do you think that is overly complex If you were planning ahead and cheap fares were on offer it would work i think.

So is it cheaper to buy a single Dublin-Belfast and use one of these on the way back?

Nope

The NIR ticket sales arrangement is ridiculously complex, the 3 days ahead is fair enough, the docket in the post and exchange is 10 years behind the times. Why can't they send you the ticket in the first place??

Just to note the €18 fare is only available Dublin to Northern Ireland, you can't get a €18 Belfast Dublin.

Discussions with IE tell us a common booking system might be in the offing between IE and NIR allowing through bookings from any Enterprise station in the North to anywhere on the IE network.

There should also have been a software update on the ticket collection TVM's which enabled the mag stripes for the exit gates and the 90 bus to finally work
