Has anyone any idea what the work been carried out on the old platform in Mullingar train station is for. This is in relation to the Athlone line side of the station. There is a new roof being put on to the station and the platform is being cleared. The old station on the opposite platform is not be altered. Is there a move on to open this railway. It would make sence to reopen the line and merge the offpeak Sligo service in with the offpeak Galway services and Westport services and sent one big train to connolly IMO.

There is a program of routine works country wide on stations, no surprises
The up Athlone platform is more accessible than the current island platform so it could be used by Dublin Mullingar services
No plans to open the Mullingar Athlone line
Is there a decent private bus service betweem Athlone and Mullingar. The Bus Iran service is very poor.

I agree with you that the bus service between these two key towns is poor.
To my knowledge there is no private bus service. The Midland Bus Company used to operate the Athlone-Ballymore-Mullingar bus route but the route has been operated by Bus Éireann for seven years or thereabouts now.
The long-standing Dundalk (latterly Navan) to Athlone Express route also runs between the towns but via Moate.
Both routes are numbered as Bus Éireann's Service 070.
An alternative way of travelling from Mullingar to Athlone is to take a Dublin-bound Bus Éireann bus to Kinnegad (see Table 115) thence a Galway-bound coach from there to Athlone (Bus Éireann Expresss Service 20 or Citylink). Generally should be possible to complete the journey comfortably in under 2 hours.
Another way of travelling would be Mullingar to Longford and from there to Athlone, though the service is less frequent.
