First time poster so this may be the wrong place for this question - apologies in advance...

I have a question about the discounted fares - if I were to avail of the discounted standard fare of €20 Dublin to Cork, could I then purchase a first class upgrade for €20 instead of buying a first class ticket in the first place. I don't think IE would allow passengers save that much e.g €40 V €79.50?

Is it possible?

Thanks in advance

I don't think it's intended to work that way but I'm aware of passengers who have been tried it and got on fine.

One of the Marks will probably be along shortly to advise what the bylaws say about it.

These promotional fares are standard class fares only and are not available in conjunction with premier class travel when making a booking on irishrail.ie.

You can't upgrade on the 20 euro fare

I didn't think they'd be that generous! Grand So!

Thanks!

I notice now it says:

Any passenger who attempts to travel on a promotional single fare i.e. €20 Cork/Heuston on a non discounted service, will be charged the difference between the normal web fare i.e. €33 and the promotional single fare as a supplement.

Which seems to imply there's no extra charge if you travel on another discounted service on the same day as the service you've booked on? So you can use your booked discounted ticket on any other service that day without paying a surcharge (other than the fare difference if you're travelling on a non-discounted service)??

That seems to be what it says all right.

I asked this very question last week... I'm not convinced that IE display the rules properly...

The question has been put to the right person in Irish Rail, should have a definitive answer shortly
