Luas smart card

I'd hope the luas smart card can be read in my wallet?
The western reader on the eastbound platform at abbey street didn't read my smart card when I tried last week.
I held my wallet up to the machine but no response.

tell me I don't have to take the "smart card" out of my wallet to get it read....
